Things you should know before booking a microblading (or any permanent makeup) appointment

Although eyebrow tattoos usually don't last forever, it is a long term commitment. Make sure you read this before booking your appointment!

Having been in the shoes of both a permanent makeup artist of 3 years as well as someone who's received both Microblading and Powder Brow services, I've compiled this comprehensive list of things you really should know prior to hitting that BOOK button.

If you are reading this after you've already booked your appointment, pay extra attention to the "what to do before your appointment day" section for tips on how to make your appointment go as smooth as possible.

#1: Check if you're a good candidate for the service

Like applying to a job, there are certain requirements when it comes to getting a permanent makeup service like microblading or microshading. However, all of these requirements are there to protect the client's health and wellness and to ensure the best results.

Permanent makeup is NOT recommended for clients who check off the following:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • You have used Accutane or similar acne treatments consistently in the past year (and here are the reasons why)

  • You received Botox on the forehead area in the past 4 weeks

  • You received a chemical peel in the past 3 weeks

  • You have previous history of keloid scarring or rashes close to the eyebrows

  • Went tanning in the past 4 weeks (by booth or sun)

  • You have abnormal heart condition, diabetes, epilepsy, uncontrolled high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, viral infections, cold or flu symptoms

  • If you have extremely oily skin, blonde hair, or large pores, microblading may not work well for you, but microshading a.k.a powder brows will be a better alternative (read more about powder brows here)

Before your appointment, inform your artist of any allergies or medical conditions not listed here.

#2. Getting beautified comes with risks, and you should know them

All cosmetics procedures have some possible risks associated with them. When it comes to permanent makeup, the risks are similar to those of getting a tattoo. The possibility of complications with eyebrow tattoos is extremely rare when all health standards (sterilization and disinfection of equipment) are met and when the proper aftercare is followed.

Although rare, the risks include:

  • Allergic reaction (i.e to pigments or numbing agents)

  • Infections (if health standards are not met by the artist/establishment, or if proper aftercare is not followed)

  • Unwanted result (your artist should take the time to properly measure & brow map the perfect shape for you and have your consent before starting)

While keeping these risks in mind, it is crucial to do your research and find a credible artist. Make sure your artist has gone through the appropriate trainings. Ask for healed result photos or even ask to speak with their previous clients to hear their experience.

#3. What is the healing process like?

Got a wedding to attend or a beachy vacation coming up? Knowing the healing process will allow you to best plan around your busy schedule. 📅

On average, microblading and microshading will take 2-4 weeks to fully heal. During this time, you must avoid 1. getting your brows wet (absolutely no swimming!), 2. extreme sun exposure, and 3. using any products on your brows.

During the second week of healing, your eyebrows may look dry and flakey (not very attractive I know, but it'll all be worth it in the end!). Scabbing is normal and a part of your skin's healing process. Depending on your skin and genetics, you may be the lucky clients who don't scab at all.

Since most of us don't want to show up to any important functions with scabby eyebrows, it is best to plan your appointment 1-2 days before your event (so scabbing has not yet started) or 3 weeks prior to your event (so scabbing is finished).

#4. Your appointment is tomorrow! Here is what you should do to prep for it.

Follow these tips and both you and your artist will thank you for it!

  • Avoid alcohol, painkillers, fish oil, and other blood thinners for 24 hours prior to your appointment

  • Come prepared with brow shapes/styles you like, showing pictures of them will allow your artist to understand your desired brow goals

  • Dress in comfy clothing as you will be laying down for 2-3 hours

  • Come with makeup - Personally I prefer when clients come with makeup because it allows the me, the artist, to

1. better understand my client's makeup habits (au natural or full glam)

2. see the brow thickness/colour that my client is accustomed to

3. take beautiful before & after photos 📸

Conclusion

To summarize, if you are considering microblading or shading your brows, you should first check if you're a good candidate and do your research. Then plan your appointment date around events or getaways. Finally, remember to properly prep yourself for the appointment day.

I hope these pointers will help you navigate your way to achieving the brows of your dreams!
